Seth MacFarlane of 'Family Guy' Is a Big-Band Singer

Seth MacFarlane of 'Family Guy' Is a Big-Band Singer

Seth MacFarlane is the creator of Family Guy, the voice of half the Griffin family, the premier Charlie Sheen roaster -- and possibly the next Frank Sinatra! In the video below, MacFarlane shows off his shockingly good jazz vocals by crooning his new tune "Nine O'Clock" on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Who knew?

MacFarlane, 37, was on the show promoting his new big band album, Music Is Better Than Words -- which, unlike most of the comic mastermind's ventures, is completely un-ironic. The record consists of 14 standards, recorded with a 55-piece orchestra at Capitol Records -- using Sinatra's own microphone. As Jimmy Kimmel pointed out to MacFarlane: On paper, it sounds like an awful idea.

"If it does terribly, I'm the first guy to start mocking the crap out of it," admitted MacFarlane. "The only thing that makes it not a complete disaster of an idea from the inception is that a lot of the style of music is what we've been doing on (Family Guy) for 10 years... It's not like I'm doing a rap album."

Fans of MacFarlane's FOX animated series, which also include American Dad! and The Cleveland Show, know exactly what he's talking about. MacFarlane has belted out plenty of musical numbers for his audience, mainly in the guise of deep-voiced baby Stewie or talking dog Brian. But are fans prepared for a "serious" album? The voice actor says that the album works because big-band music isn't all that serious to begin with.

"When Sinatra, Dean Martin and those guys got up, it's almost like they didn't give a s***," he told Kimmel. "They were drunk and God knows what else. That's something about this music: Even at its most vulnerable, it really never takes itself quite seriously."

Even so, MacFarlane has recruited two seriously talented duet partners: Norah Jones and Sara Bareilles. The album is in stores this week.
