Uncle of orphaned, injured Texas children calls outreach 'amazing.'

On July 3, the Berry family suffered an incredible tragedy. Parents Joshua and Robin Berry were killed in a car crash, while brothers Peter, 9, and Aaron, 8, were paralyzed, possibly for life, and remain hospitalized. Their younger sister, Willa, 6, was also injured, but suffered only broken bones. In the weeks since the crash in Texas, celebrities have been doing their part to help raise money for the care of the three young children.
Using the power of social media, everyone from Justin Bieber and Britney Spears to Lady Gaga and Usher have asked their fans to "Show Your Hearts" with donations at showyourhearts.org and via text message (texting BERRY to 85944 donates $10). Their call to arms has meant the world to Matt Berry, the kids' uncle.
"My wife had this family member in the Justin Bieber camp, and when the accident happened ... they reached out to us and asked how they could help," he told MTV News on Thursday. "So, it's been pretty much organic from their reaching out. Right after the accident, he was asking for their names and praying with his mom for the kids. It's not something we expected would happen, obviously.
"So, my understanding is that he wanted to do something to help, and the best way they could help was to create awareness," he continued. "They have a lot of friends and contacts. And then, of course, once their campaigns started going, it looked like a lot of people joined it because I think everyone had some sort of feeling of empathy."
The family is still mending: Peter and Aaron's "lifelong conditions" have been amplified by the loss of their parents; meanwhile Willa is still trying to come to terms with the incident.
Matt Berry said of all the public support they've received has "definitely helped." "Anything that goes to help the kids in their predicament [helps]. I don't know how long it will continue. I'm not someone who likes to be in the public eye, so it's a little bit awkward, but it's amazing.
"It's a little bit overwhelming," he added, but he said that right now, the family is taking it "day by day" as they deal with the aftermath of such a tremendously tragic turn of events.
"If it was up to us, we'd pray that they were able to stand up in a couple of weeks and walk out of the hospital, but the likelihood of that happening is low," he said, adding that the boys are readying for rehab to try to heal in any small way. "There's been a lot of people supporting us, and that's huge. The ultimate dream is if in their lifetime, there's enough momentum to figure something out and fix spinal-cord injuries. We've got two of them that need something special."

Mark Wahlberg doesn't seem like the sort to feel threatened by another guy -- and yet there is one actor who has the mighty "Marky Mark" feeling just a bit inadequate: 19-year-old Twilight heartthrob Taylor Lautner.
While accepting an award at a Hollywood Foreign Press Association luncheon in Beverly Hills on Thursday, Wahlberg joked that he and pal Leonardo DiCaprio, who had also just received an award, were past their prime.
"I'm sitting at a table with a gentleman who is better looking than you and is in better shape than me, so we are both out of a job, dude," Mark, 40, said to Leo, 36. "Taylor Lautner, we're screwed!"
As the room burst into laugher, Wahlberg continued: "It's over, dude. Titanic and Boogie Nights were a long time ago. I accept it. I had a good run and on to the next."
Lautner, who was present at the luncheon, was more than a little flattered by the shout-out. "I don't even know the word to describe being here," he told E! News. "It's so odd. It's such an honor. I'm up on the stage and talking in front of people like that? The people that I looked up to my entire life? Hearing words like that from Mark and everybody it's just really surreal."
Lautner's star sure is on the rise: His first leading-man vehicle, the action-thriller Abduction, hits theaters Sept. 23, and he's back as shirt-allergic werewolf Jacob Black in Nov. 18's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1.
But don't feel too bad for Wahlberg and DiCaprio. Mark is in high demand coming off his critically acclaimed passion project The Fighter last year, and has the thriller Contraband and the black comedy Ted (from Family Guy mastermind Seth MacFarlane) due next year. DiCaprio, meanwhile, scored a huge hit with last year's twisty thriller Inception, is already garnering Oscar buzz for his turn as the titular CIA director in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar (in theaters Nov. 9) and will play another title character in Baz Luhrmann's eagerly anticipated The Great Gatsby adaptation (due in November 2012).

'What the accident basically taught me is, in life, you have to count your blessings,' he says during 'MTV First: Sean Kingston.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway
Sean Kingston sat down with MTV News on Tuesday night (August 2) and opened up for the first time about the jet-ski accident that landed him in the hospital. During "MTV First: Sean Kingston," the singer spoke candidly with Sway Calloway at his house in Miami about the day that changed his life forever, letting fans know that months after his jet ski crashed into a bridge near his home in Florida, he's now back and better than ever.
"I'm doing good. I'm feeling great. I'm excited. I'm happy," he said. "A lot of people don't know it was a deeper situation. I had open heart surgery and I had two other surgeries; it was a life-or-death situation."
Kingston — the Jamaican-American singer who broke onto the scene with the "Stand by Me"-sampling song "Beautiful Girls" and scored another hit with the Justin Bieber collabo "Eenie Meenie" last year — was rushed to the hospital May 29 after a jet-ski crash. He explained to Sway that he was going about 35 miles an hour when he miscalculated how high the tide had risen and collided with a bridge.
The singer revealed for the first time in the sit-down that just as he was being released from the hospital for injuries related to the crash, he was rushed into surgery to deal with a newly discovered heart condition. "They were gonna send me home, but then I had felt a pain in my left chest, and I told my mom," he explained. "They rushed me and they did a lot of scans on me, [and] they said I couldn't leave."
It was discovered that blood had filled up in his chest and his aorta was torn. He went into surgery several times to fix the condition, knowing that the risks were high, but he survived, and now he's focused on the positive. "I'm 100 percent right now," he said. "I've been in the house chilling, about to start work on my new album. I got L.A. Reid now as my new president. I got a story to tell now."
Kingston isn't taking his new lease on life lightly. "What the accident basically taught me is, in life, you have to count your blessings," he said. "You just got to keep God present at all times and think about the consequences."
During the chat, Kingston opened up about the details of the accident, talked about the support he's received from celebrity pals like Justin Bieber and Chris Brown, his new music and finally getting the chance to meet the man who saved him after he crashed. MTV News will be rolling out more from the interview with Kingston, who thanked his fans for all their support after the accident.

'I am confident, that after further investigation, both men will be vindicated,' lawyer tells MTV News of Sean and his friend.
By Rob Markman
Big Sean was arrested Thursday night after New York State Park Police received a complaint that a female had been sexually assaulted during a concert where the G.O.O.D. Music rapper performed on the same bill as Wiz Khalifa.
The rapper, born Sean Anderson, was arrested along with Willie Hansbro at approximately 9:50 p.m. ET after the woman issued the complaint. The Finally Famous rapper, who is currently on Khalifa's Rolling Papers Tour, performed Thursday night at Artpark in Lewiston, New York. Big Sean and Hansbro were eventually released on $500 bail each.
The two men, both hailing from Detroit, have been charged with forcible touching, unlawful imprisonment in the second degree and sex abuse in the third degree and will have to appear in court. "Both men were charged with misdemeanors and they both vehemently deny the allegations," Sean's lawyer, Scott E. Lemon, said in a press release issued to MTV News. "I am confident, that after further investigation, both men will be vindicated."
Big Sean has been riding high since his debut album, Finally Famous, hit #3 on the Billboard albums chart this past June. The LP's lead single, "My Last," hit #1 on the Billboard rap chart, and the 23-year old MC earned his first Video Music Awards nomination in the Best New Artist category

Experts think B needs a hit single soon, but her latest album seems poised to top the charts again next week.

Beyonce's 4
Photo: Columbia
As a contender for 2011 Summer Diva, Beyoncé is certainly making great strides to rule the airwaves this summer. After B's fourth solo LP, 4, debuted at #1 last week, it's looking likely that she'll top the charts on next week's Billboard albums chart as well.
A rep for SoundScan hadn't responded to MTV News' request for an exact number of units expected to be sold by next week, but Billboard is reporting that a lack of high-powered new releases should secure a repeat top spot for Beyoncé's latest.
The buzz around B and the album will probably only continue to grow, since she's slated to debut a video for her next single, "Best Thing I Never Had," very soon. But her album's success comes as a bit of a surprise, seeing as "Run the World (Girls)" nor any other single has really resonated with fans or radio so far.
"Beyoncé, I love her, but none of her singles thus far off 4 seem poised to be doing huge numbers," Perez Hilton told MTV News.
But we should not count B out in the singles department just yet, Us Weekly senior music editor Ian Drew said.
"You've got to remember that Beyoncé, being typical Beyoncé, her albums generally are anchored by really big hits; this album doesn't have those hits yet," Drew told MTV News. "It's not to say that it won't. There are some very strong songs on the album, but they have not been released yet. There are those songs on it, but they have not come out yet and they haven't struck yet. Beyoncé is coming out at a time when radio is very crowded."
Despite those obstacles, B is definitely marching to the beat of her own drummer. "She's going in a different direction," Drew said. "She's taking control of her own career."

Singer tells MTV News about gay fan inspired by her song 'Animal.'
By Gil Kaufman
Ke$ha knows all about the perks of being a headliner. On her Get $leazy Tour, the singer gets to call all the shots, blast her fans in the face with tons of glitter and handpick which dudes she wants to party and share the stage with.
But it's not all backstage shenanigans and groupie love. When MTV News sat down with the "Blow" singer in New York earlier this week before her gig at Roseland Ballroom, Ke$ha said that amid the nightly onstage parties there have also been some poignant moments on her first headlining outing.
"Best moment? There are so many. Every night's amazing. I have kids outside right now chanting my name and it's awesome," she said of the first leg of the tour. "There was one night a fan came onstage, I invited him onstage, and he had a tattoo of the dollar sign. I was like, 'Oh, that's awesome! Badass. You're part of the cult, man.' "
And then, she said, he began to cry and explained that he was able to come out of the closet to his friends and family thanks to her song "Animal."
"And I'm standing onstage about to sing a song about growing back a pair of testicles ["Grow a Pear"] and I had tears rolling down my face and chills all over my body," she said. "Because that's really the reason I do music, to inspire people to be themselves."
Ke$ha has been a vocal supporter of the "It Gets Better" video project, which aims to help gay, bisexual and transgender youth find hope in the face of teasing and bullying.
The "Get $leazy" juggernaut continues on Saturday night with a show at Clarion University in Clarion, Pennsylvania.

It appears that Vatican warlocks with "Adonis blood" are not, in fact, immortal. Rumors have been brewing for some time that that Charlie Sheen's Two and a Half Men alter ego Charlie Harper would be killed off so Ashton Kutcher could take over headlining duties. Now, Deadline is reporting that by the time the show's ninth season premieres on Sept. 19, Sheen's "Uncle Charlie" will indeed have bitten the big one -- and, what's more, viewers will get a front-row seat to his (sure-to-be inappropriately hilarious) funeral.
The episode will reportedly kick of with a memorial service attended by a gaggle of Charlie's ex-girlfriends, and will then segue into the sale of his beachfront property. Among those looking to purchase Chateau Harper will be a distinguished list of real-life celebrities and characters from creator Chuck Lorre's other shows, as well as -- you guessed it! -- the mystery character played by Ashton Kutcher.
Warner Bros. TV and CBS are, of course, trying to keep the plot points under wraps, so they have yet to comment.
It remains to be seen how Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones' father-son duo, Jake and Alan, will stay on in the house, but we've got a pretty safe guess: Kutcher gets the house, and Jake and Alan somehow leech their way into his life -- hopefully with a better end reward for Ashton's character than what Uncle Charlie got.
However it goes down, there's little doubt that millions of viewers will be tuning in to check out the premiere, if for no other reason than sheer curiosity.
And what of the dearly departed Sheenius? Well, don't mourn him just yet. Charlie has signed on to headline a new series title, appropriately, Anger Management. And he's also getting ready for the upcoming Comedy Central Roasts Charlie Sheen special -- which suspiciously airs on the same night as the Two and a Half Men premiere.
So while Sheen's Two and a Half Men alter ego may be dead, Charlie Sheen himself is very much alive.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables
Mixtape: The World's Most Hardest MC
Headliner: Styles P
Key Cameos: Jadakiss and Sheek Louch
Real Spit : The LOX's Styles P is a busy man. In between running his juice bar in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx, New York, and penning a new fiction novel, the Yonkers rap vet is prepping a mixtape that he's looking to release within the next two weeks and he plans to follow that with his fourth studio album in September.
"I'll probably drop a mixtape next week, the week after that, real soon: The World's Most Hardest MC and then Master of Ceremonies will be like September," Styles told Mixtape Daily on Monday.
Throughout his career, the Ghost has built a reputation for keeping his raps rooted in the street. Never one to water down his sound, on Most Hardest MC, P promises to once again deliver uncompromised hip-hop. "It's just gonna be hard. It's gonna be like the old feel, but kind of a new feel," he said before revealing that he will collaborate with his LOX partners Jadakiss and Sheek Louch for the tape. "Expect another crazy in and out with me and Kiss. Expect a joint with me and Louch. I'm just gonna kinda go ape on it."
Last week, Styles and Kiss released a freestyle over the beat to Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne single "Otis." While the LOX rendition has quickly become a fan favorite, Styles insists that for his mixtapes, there will be no retreads.
"I'm gonna do original beats," he declared. "The mixtape game kinda switched now, because I don't want the Feds knockin' at my door for using Weezy and Jay-Z and Kanye and everybody's beats, so you kinda gotta go original."

Maybach Music Group R&B singer tells Mixtape Daily about The Road Less Traveled.
By Rob Markman
Masspike Miles
Photo: MTV News
Mixtape Daily: Main Pick
Mixtape: The Road Less Traveled
Headliner: Masspike Miles
Representing: Boston
Real Spit: It ain't all "Tupac Back" and "I'm a Boss" over there at Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group. Rozay's R&B singer Masspike Miles slows things down on his The Road Less Traveled mixtape.
Masspike, who hails from Boston, has been a longtime collaborator for Ross and company, but he holds his own on his latest, capturing inspiration outside of hip-hop. "The Road Less Traveled is basically a great mixture of great sounds influenced by the '60s and '70s: some great jazz musicians like Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and different people like that," he told Mixtape Daily. "I've been sitting around, driving around to jazz music for the last year and really been inspired by the changes and the sounds and different things like that."
With only a few rap contributions from the likes of Torch, Smoke Bulga and Bun B, Masspike uses soothing grooves on the slow and sensual "Making Love." On "Walked Away," Miles sings of a painful breakup over an acoustic guitar track that eventually evolves with electric riffs and synth keys.
Bun B raps from the heart on "Devoted," dedicating his verse to his wife in a very mature fashion. The tape's standout, "Sex Compass (Christopher Columbus)," finds Masspike Miles discovering different sexual positions with his lover, and on "I'm All Out of Love," we see the singer vulnerable with a weakened heart.
The Road Less Traveled is unapologetically R&B with a street twist. "In the Hood" is a perfect example of when he blends the two. On "Hood," Masspike switches the formula and raps over a frantic track bragging about his frozen wrists and status in the game.
He might have taken the less-traveled one, but ultimately the road Masspike Miles is on should lead to riches.
Joints to Check For
"Sex Compass (Christopher Columbus)": "This concept came about during a funny conversation that I was having with this young lady, and I basically told her I invented a sex compass after we had our experience together. She laughed, and I said, 'Wow, that's such a great record.' "

YouTube sensation opens up to MTV News about just-released Hold on 'Til the Night, guest-starring on 'Raising Hope.'
By Jocelyn Vena
Greyson Chance
Photo: Gilbert Carrasquillo/ FilmMagic
Greyson Chance's debut album, Hold on 'Til the Night, is finally in stores. The singer's debut mixes his love for Brit pop (à la Coldplay), vintage pop-rock (like Journey) and confessional pop (in the style of Taylor Swift) — all music that has inspired the long-simmering record.
"I'm a little nervous, I'm a little anxious to just get it out, but I'm just so excited. I've been working on this for a year now," he told MTV News on the phone as he prepped for the album's release Tuesday (August 2). "And I'm just so excited for my fans to hear the finished, full versions of every song on the record, and I hope they enjoy it.
"When we first started recording, and what was so great about it and made it authentic and real, was that we had no limits," he added. "It was really cool to not have a set-in-stone genre and lyrical message. I'm very excited because it's a very real record."
Two singles into the album, fans will finally get the chance to hear all the songs just the way Chance always imagined they would sound. And he's most excited for fans to hear the album's final track.
"I'm very excited for the fans to hear 'Take a Look at Me Now,' and this song is just so important to me because it was basically when I was writing the song, I was basically thinking, 'I am screaming this out to all those people who doubted me,' " he said. "It's one of those types of inspirational songs that I get my inspiration from."
Chance's rise to fame has been quick. He went from an Ellen DeGeneres- and Lady Gaga-approved YouTube sensation to a legitimate pop singer almost overnight. And the transition hasn't been unnoticed by the 13-year-old.
"It's a total culture shock: I never expected that by putting [a performance of Gaga's] 'Paparazzi' on YouTube that it would lead to this," he explained. "It's so crazy, and I'm so lucky for the platform that I have and the amazing fans out there who kept on watching the video and wanted me as an artist."
August is also a big month for Chance because he will turn 14 and will also tape his small-screen acting debut. "It's a very exciting time to be me," he said, laughing. "I'm so excited for the record. For my birthday, I'm actually going to be filming 'Raising Hope.' I'm going to be guest-starring on that TV show, and I'm very excited for it."

'Saturday Night Live' funnyman serves as Chief Shark Officer for Discovery Channel's annual shark fest.
By Eric Ditzian
It's Shark Week, people! It's that time of year when it's too damn hot to go outside and we're all too willing to embrace a shameless and brilliant marketing ploy in which Discovery Channel devotes much of its schedule to the sharp-toothed fishies and we stay glued to the TV because the whole thing honestly is freaking badass. To wit, get ready this week for documentaries called "Shark Feeding Frenzy," "Sharkman," "Air Jaws: Sharks of South Africa" and "Top Five Eaten Alive."
Yes, the narration will be heavy on machismo, the soundtracks will veer between horror-movie strings and staccato, annoy-your-neighbors bass lines, and the whole thing will be overseen by Andy Samberg. We're not exactly sure why, and we're certainly not complaining, but the "Saturday Night Live" funnyman has been appointed Discovery's first-ever Chief Shark Officer. Tops among his awesome responsibilities, we found out during a chat with Samberg and his Lonely Islands pals this spring, is the requirement that the CSO taunt all non-CSOs.
"Chief Shark Officer! In your face, other dudes!" he cracked.
"We're kind of the Chief Shark brain trust on this," Jorma Taccone offered.
"No, you guys haven't helped me at all on this," Samberg shot back with killer instinct.
So it's Samberg and Samberg alone guiding us through the hazards and happiness of Shark Week. Can he handle the pressure? After debuting in 1987, the weeklong block of programming was watched by almost 31 million people last year — the highest-rated shark-themed week in Discovery's history. Samberg ain't scared.
"I've already been in the water with sharks," he said of a trip to the Bahamas to shoot promotional material for the week.
"Did you get to slap five with a shark?" Taccone wanted to know.
"Yes, me and a shark slapped five!" Samberg replied.

My good friend Caprice Crane's new book, With a Little Luck, is out today. Yay, Caprice!
It's gotten great reviews:
"Crane is one of the funniest writers of popular fiction around. The dialog (inner and outer) is laugh-out-loud, snort-inducing hilarious . . . Readers will want to cross their fingers and spit while throwing salt over their shoulders if it helps Berry reach her dreams. Highly recommended."
—Library Journal
"Fans of Stacy Ballis and Cara Lockwood will appreciate Crane's effortlessly funny style, which is often attempted in popular fiction but is rarely this well executed...Lighthearted and charmingly honest."
—Booklist
"[A] satisfying romantic comedy...[with] real character growth."
—Kirkus Reviews
And even better blurbs:
"Romantic, poignant and funny—this book is a lucky find for lit fans. Caprice Crane is a nimble and gifted storyteller."
—Diablo Cody, Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Juno
"A hilarious romp that oozes charm and giddy fun. Caprice Crane is a true talent."
—Molly Jong-Fast, author of The Social Climber's Handbook
"Witty, fast-paced, and sheer fun. Caprice Crane is a master of dialogue. Half the time I was reading this book I was smiling, which made me look like a crazy person on the subway."
—Jancee Dunn, author of Don’t You Forget About Me and Why Is My Mother Getting a Tattoo?
"Absolutely charming and hilarious."
—Missy Peregrym, star of the movie Stick It and ABC's Rookie Blue
"With a Little Luck scores in humor, head, and heart. In other words, it’s a perfect trifecta."
—Karyn Bosnak, author of 20 Times a Lady (soon to be the major motion picture What's Your Number?)
(Omg, who is that last fantastic blurber?) (I meant every word of it.)
And most importantly, she has the cutest dog ever (who likes to video chat with Bev):
Anyway, check it out, buy it—it's fantastic!

Gorgeous and a do-gooder!
Ian Somerhalder testified before Congress Thursday for wildlife conservation. The Vampire Diaries actor, 32, is head of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which, according to its website, "aims to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures."
"Environmental conservation has not just always been a passion of mine, but a priority (of mine)," he said as he made a plea to Congress to pass the bill H.R. 50, the Multinational Species Conservation Funds Reauthorization Act of 2011.
During his speech, the impassioned actor -- who started the foundation in December, as a birthday present to himself -- rattled off numerous statistics and facts about endangered tigers, rhinos, African and Asian elephants, marine turtles and apes.
"Species conservation is beyond a doubt an issue that truly matters to the American public," he said. "We're lucky in this case, because many of our most beloved wildlife species are clinging to survival by a thread."
Somerhalder managed to capture our hearts with his portrayal on the vampire series, but to know he is a compassionate human being in real life makes our crush that much sweeter.

Ever since they were first announced, the O Music Awards have proudly proclaimed themselves the untraditional alternative to the staid world of red carpets, acceptance speeches and celebrity glad-handing.
And for further proof of that point, consider the following: Though the inaugural O Music Awards won't premiere until April 28, the first award will be handed out on Monday at 4 p.m. ET ... and it's a big one.
For weeks, fans have been voting for the Most Innovative Music Video through the O Music Awards official site, and on Monday — in a roundtable debate moderated by MTV News' James Montgomery — a winner will be crowned.
The O Music Awards Debate for the Most Innovative Music Video, presented by FUZE®, will stream live on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com. Joining Montgomery around the table will be acclaimed video director Wayne Isham, Mashable's Brenna Ehrlich and some super-secret celebrity guests.
The Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and more will also take part in the discussion about just what makes a video truly innovative, and the folks who are nominated for the award — a list that includes Arcade Fire, Robyn, OK Go and Andy Grammer — will also Skype in to make the case for why their video deserves to be named Most Innovative.
On Monday morning, the original list of 10 nominees will be whittled down to the top five vote-getters, and then, during the debate, our roundtable and the Internet audience will cut that list down to the final three. At the very end, we'll announce the winner of the very first O Music Award for Most Innovative Video.
The inaugural O Music Awards will stream live from Las Vegas at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on OMusicAwards.com. Tune in to see who will reign supreme in categories like Most Viral Dance, Funniest Music Short and NSFW Music Video!
