Katie Holmes Throws Surprise Birthday Party for Tom Cruise

Katie Holmes Throws Surprise Birthday Party for Tom Cruise

Katie Holmes has been keeping a secret from Tom Cruise: a surprise party for his 49th birthday! Though Cruise didn't turn the big 4-9 until Sunday, it was on Saturday that Holmes, 32, threw her husband of four years a big -- and unexpected! -- celebration at Miami's SoHo Beach House. And, of course, 5-year-old daughter Suri wore heels.

"Katie planned everything herself," a source tells People of the rooftop party, which was attended by 40 close friends. "She wanted to be sure everything was just right."

So what's Katie's formula for getting a party "just right"? First, take a swanky members-only beach club with a great swimming pool. Then add Cuban music, plenty of Italian food and a giant chocolate cake. Throw in a face-painter to keep Suri entertained, and ta-da: your movie-star surprise party is complete!

That's not to say there weren't a few hitches in the proceedings. According to the New York Post, a few important guests -- including Jennifer Lopez and Rock of Ages director Adam Shankman -- were unable to attend. (Katie should know, since she reportedly handled the RSVPs herself!) But for the important thing is that Cruise had a blast -- and even managed to fit in some family swim time with teenage children Connor, 16, and Isabella, 18. He also kept a watchful eye on Suri, who played with friends, bounced a beach ball and had her face decorated with multiple glittery designs, all while wearing her favorite tiny gold heels.

Now that the party's over, Cruise will return to filming Rock of Ages in Florida, while the rest of the family heads back to L.A. But Katie has a lasting souvenir of the event: a beautiful pave diamond ring that she was spotted wearing at the party for the first time, next to her platinum wedding band. Maybe Tom wasn't the only one who got a surprise on Saturday!

Britney Spears Says She'd Love To Tour With Usher

In her 'Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale' special, she calls the 'OMG' singer 'really hot right now.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

What do Britney Spears and Usher have in common? Well, they are both global superstars with a back catalogue of tunes that have kept fans dancing for a really long time and they both recently hooked up with will.i.am for tracks on their latest releases (the Black Eyed Peas mastermind worked on the pop vixen's Femme Fatale tune "Big Fat Bass"). And, if Spears has her way, she and the "OMG" singer could be hitting the road together.

When Spears sat down to talk with Sway Calloway for her "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale" special — airing Sunday (April 3) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV — the singer revealed that Usher is first on her list of artists she'd like to join her on tour.

"Oh, I'm so excited. I'm really excited about going on tour, very," she explained about her forthcoming summer trek, which happens to have a spot open on the bill now that Enrique Iglesias has pulled out of the gig. "I think Usher's really great right now. I think he's really hot right now. That would be cool [to tour with him]."

The North American road trip is expected to kick off June 17 in Sacramento, California, and will run for 26 dates, winding up on August 13 in Toronto. More details will be announced soon.

The "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale" special is a mixture of behind-the-scenes footage of the singer as she wraps up production on her album, which dropped this week, as well as an inside look at her life and fans. In addition, those who couldn't make Spears' recent nightclub show in Las Vegas will get to see her as she takes the stage in her latest pop incarnation.

Don't miss "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale," airing Sunday (April 3) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

So a Lady and Her Monkey Walk Into a Petsmart...

I went to Petsmart yesterday to get some things for little Mary Margaret, and while I was pulling into the parking lot, I passed a lady getting out of her car with a monkey on her shoulders.

Of course I came to a screeching halt because there was a lady getting our of her car WITH A MONKEY ON HER SHOULDERS, and that's just something you don't see every day.

I proceeded to take a photo...

...but then thought it would be better to capture the craziness on video, so here it is:

Lady and Her Monkey Go to Petsmart from Karyn Bosnak on Vimeo.

When I told Mark about the lady and her monkey and showed him my movie, he said, "You really are crazy." I was like, "I'm crazy? THE MONKEY WAS WEARING A DIAPER AND PEARLS."

I mean, for real, let's put this into perspective.

Anywho, here's another photo of the lady and her monkey at the checkout counter:

I realize I now have one cat and two dogs, but at least I don't walk around with a monkey on my shoulders. (Yet.)

Tom Hanks' 'Larry Crowne': The Reviews Are In

Critics have mixed feelings about Hanks' first directing effort in 15 years.
By Eric Ditzian

Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks in 'Larry Crowne'
Photo: Universal Pictures

Perhaps only the boom-boom-pow theatrics of "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," which will be making most of the noise (and the box-office bucks) at the multiplex this weekend, could overshadow a new offering from Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.

Or possibly the mixed reviews for their comedy, "Larry Crowne," are helping create a lower profile for the heavily marketed film. Hanks has taken on directing duties for only the second time in his career (his debut was the 1996 nostalgia trip "That Thing You Do!") and recruited Roberts to join in the action. But the results have been met with outright disdain in some corners, with critics scoffing at a lack of laughs and a bland story line. Yet where others see a milquetoast comedy, many reviewers see a skilled director delivering a warm-hearted summer diversion. Read on for those "Larry Crowne" critiques and more.

The Story
"In 'Larry Crowne,' Hanks plays a nice guy who gets fired from his retail job because he lacks the education to qualify him for a management position. This happens despite his countless awards for Employee of the Month. Larry cashes in his possessions, trades his car for a scooter and decides to enroll in a local community college. As his economics teacher, he draws Dr. Matsutani (George Takei), the only character in the film interesting enough to have a movie made about him. As his public speaking teacher, he gets Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), a character who seems to have drifted over from the auditions for 'Bad Teacher.' ... I watched the movie with all the pleasure I bring to watching bread rise. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy watching bread rise, but it lacks a certain degree of interest. You look forward to it being finished." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Performances
"The real reason to watch this modestly charming, featherweight bauble is the chemistry between Hanks and Roberts, beloved superstars who make a beautiful pair. 'Larry Crowne' is only their second movie together (after 'Charlie Wilson's War'), but Hanks' noble everyman is an inspired match for Roberts, who plays her character's bitter disappointment with a believable acidity." — Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald

The Direction
" 'Larry Crowne' marks Tom Hanks' first work as a director since his delightful 'That Thing You Do!' 15 years ago. And now, as then, the star demonstrates a generous instinct for calm, steady pacing and cleanly framed scenes that acknowledge every character's place in the whole, whether in the classroom, on the streets, or in the working world: When, for example, Larry draws on his Navy skills to take a job as a short-order cook, Hanks the director observes the work of every diner employee with genuine interest. ... It's easy enough to accept the romantic-comedy luck of the two finding each another. It's much tougher, and ultimately useless, to buy everything else about this fairy tale of self-reinvention in a stalled economy." — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

The Laughs
"The script by Mr. Hanks and Nia Vardalos ('My Big Fat Greek Wedding') is one of those wonders of the cinema: You wonder who thought any of this was funny. The fractious scenes between Mercedes and her stay-at-home husband (Bryan Cranston) are painful, although they do give Larry the opportunity to provide a romantic palliative. Larry's adoption by a group of younger students — all of whom ride eco-friendly motor scooters — is cloyingly, comically clueless." — John Anderson, The Wall Street Journal

The Final Word
"I don't know how 'Larry Crowne' is going to do this summer, but I am surprised at the venom some people seem to have mustered towards it. I found it engaging, constantly warm and funny, and very direct in its ambitions. If you want a break from the barrage of spectacle that crams out theater screens every year at this time, 'Larry Crowne" represents a lovely alternative, and I hope people give it a chance. I'd hate to see Hanks wait another fifteen years to direct again." — Drew McWeeny, HitFix

Justin Bieber Vintage Video: His First Meeting With Usher

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, 'Never Say Never' star said in 2009.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Brian Phares/MTV News

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.

In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.

"My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I'd never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people," he recalled.

"And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, 'Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?' The politest possible way he could say no, he did. ... I took the hint. I didn't get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session."

But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. "He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, 'I should have let this kid sing,' and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me."

As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.

"As far as Usher being my mentor, he's definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important," he explained.

"There's a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life."

On Friday, Justin Bieber's 3-D documentary, "Never Say Never," opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.

Usher To Donate Gadhafi Money To Charity

'I will be donating all of my personal proceeds...to various human rights organizations,' singer says of concert linked to Libyan dictator.

R&B superstar Usher announced Friday (March 4) that he was donating to various charities proceeds from appearing at a private event at St. Barts linked to Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, according to a statement made to the Associated Press.

The Grammy award winner's renouncement comes after similar announcements from singers Mariah Carey, Nelly Furtado, and Beyoncé, all of whom were revealed to have performed at private concerts linked to the Middle Eastern leader, who has faced open revolt and major political uprisings since February.

"I am sincerely troubled to learn about the circumstances surrounding the Nikki Beach St. Bart's event that took place on New Year's Eve 2009," Usher said of the concert, at which he appeared alongside Beyoncé but did not perform. "I will be donating all of my personal proceeds from that event to various human rights organizations."

Usher has already begun the process, having made a donation to Amnesty International, the AP reports. The exact size of the donation is not known.

The New Year's Eve gig was reportedly for Moammar's fourth son Muastassim, who an unnamed music industry source told MTV News has a history of throwing lavish parties "jammed" with supermodels.

Beyoncé, who sang at the event, donated all proceeds from her performance to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, established in the wake of the Haitian earthquake.

"All monies paid to Beyoncé for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year's Eve 2009, including the commissions paid to her booking agency, were donated to the earthquake relief efforts for Haiti over a year ago," the "Halo" singer's publicist said in a statement to The Huffington Post. "Once it became known that the third-party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause."

Singer Nelly Furtado tweeted February 28 that she plans to make similar amends.

"In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Gadhafi clan to perform a 45 min. show for guests at a hotel in Italy," she tweeted. "I am going to donate the $."

The leader of Libya since a successful military coup in 1969, Gadhafi has reportedly lost control of much of his country as a result of widespread uprisings. The United Nations voted unanimously to refer the dictator to the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

Beanie Sigel To Set The Record Straight On 'RapFix Live'

Philly MC will talk about his Jay-Z drama and his future moves next Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com.
By Rob Markman

Some call him the Truth, others call him the Reason, but most just call him Beanie Sigel. And next Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, we'll call the former Roc-A-Fella rapper our guest when he joins Sway on "RapFix Live."

There will be much to talk about with the Philadelphia MC as we will address his relationship with Jay-Z, the brash comments he's made about Hov and the apology he supposedly issued to Jigga at the top of June.

Last week, during a radio appearance on Sirius XM, the Broad Street Bully denied that he ever apologized to Jay-Z and charged that his quotes were taken out of context by XXL magazine, the outlet that first broke the news of Beans' supposed olive branch. He did, however, acknowledge that it was Jay-Z who gave him his start in hip-hop, and for that he expressed his gratitude.

Sigel rose to rap prominence after he was signed to Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records, where he released his debut album, The Truth, in 1999. Respected equally for his rap bars as well as his street bravado, the MC has seen his career tainted by legal trouble. In 2004, Beans was sentenced to a year and a day in prison after he pled guilty to federal weapon charges. It was around this time that Roc-A-Fella co-founders Jay-Z and Damon Dash split, leaving the company fractured and forcing artists on their roster to choose sides. Sigel managed to release 2005's The B. Coming on Dash's DDMG label and then his 2007 follow-up, The Solution, on Roc-A-Fella Records two years later. Still, the relationship between him and Jay has since been damaged.

In 2009, Sigel addressed the drama and threw shots at Jay-Z on several songs, including "What You Talkin Bout," a track he released in October of that year.

Now, Sigel aims to set the record straight on the next episode of "RapFix Live."

Ke$ha, Adam Lambert, Ne-Yo Have A Few Royal Wedding Gift Ideas

From 'guyliner' to American delicacies like Uncrustables, Kathy Griffin, Mike Posner and more tell us what they'd get Will and Kate.
By Terri Schwartz

What kind of wedding gift do you give the royal couple who has everything?

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is on Friday (April 29), so MTV News reached out to some of our favorite Hollywood celebrities — from Ke$ha to Adam Lambert. Fortunately, they had some solid ideas!

"I haven't met them, so it would be kind of awkward," the "Tik Tok" singer admitted to MTV News. "I might paint them something. Maybe I'll paint them a guitar."

Like Ke$ha, other celebs had suggestions that were from the heart, even if they weren't the most practical.

"I will go out on a limb and say these two individuals maybe haven't had Uncrustables before in their life. I would get them a strawberry Uncrustable," Mike Posner said about the pastry.

David Cook followed up on the all-American food idea. "I feel like they have everything except maybe they probably don't have an Applebee's gift card. I'll go [with an] Applebee's gift card," the "American Idol" alum said.

Other stars said they'd gift the British prince and soon-to-be-princess with an item they were personally best known for.

"I'd probably buy William some eyeliner," Lambert said. "He could do that, he could rock that look. I think."

Ne-Yo was more empathetic, saying he would give gifts that could help shield them from photographers and blend in with everyday people. "Three years' supply of sunglasses. Yeah, put them on. A bunch of baseball caps, throw those on, and try to move around like regular people," the singer said. "I can't imagine what it would be like having to live under that big of a magnifying glass your whole life ... and fake mustaches, that's what I'd give them."

Brooke Burke went the more traditional route, saying she would get Will and Kate a journal to record the big event. "I would ask them to really take the time to write down thoughts and phrases and wishes," Burke said. "And not really to lose sight of how they feel about each other now and to really hold on to that feeling."

Kathy Griffin had good intentions but the comedian couldn't resist a puke joke.

"If I had to get the royal couple a gift, I would get them the Royal Couple Vomit Bag, which someone sent me a photo of," Griffin told us. "So you can actually buy vomit bags with their image on it, and I think that that is an honor and I hope that they see it as such."

What would you give to William and Kate? Share your ideas in the comments section!

Beyonce Talks Career, Motherhood With Piers Morgan

'I always said I'd have a baby at 30,' singer says in new interview.
By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé on "Piers Morgan Tonight"
Photo: CNN

It's B Day. Today is the day that Beyoncé finally drops her new album, 4. And on Monday night, with less than a day until her album's release, the singer sat down with CNN's Piers Morgan to open up about this latest installment in her life.

The pair kicked off the conversation by talking about Beyoncé's Glastonbury Festival set just a day before. "Well, you know, I'm still walking on the clouds, I'm still kind of shocked. I think it's because I've seen Glastonbury ... and only amazing rock stars perform and it's the coolest festival," she gushed. "[To] be the first woman and first African-American woman ... It's a little strange when you think about it, but I'm just happy I was the first woman. Everybody was just united."

She said she was a bit nervous when she took the stage but explained that she found strength by embracing her diva status. "I do [like being a diva]! Because I've met what a diva is supposed to be, and I've met Patti LaBelle and I've met Tina Turner and I've met these incredible woman.

"[They're] graceful and talented and strong and fearless and brave and someone with humility," she continued. "And I think it's an appropriate time to be a diva."

Before Beyoncé began work on 4, she took some time off for some self-exploration. She admitted that her life had been such a whirlwind that she didn't even realize what it meant to have so many Grammys on her mantle. "I learned a lot about myself, the biggest thing is, I love to perform," she said. "I love music. I love what I do. I love singing in the studio and writing songs and coming up with video treatments. I learned balance. I learned the importance of taking time for myself."

This year Beyoncé turns 30 and she said that she's had some lofty personal goals for herself. She also addressed those ever-recurring rumors that she's pregnant. "I feel like a woman. I feel like I'm very aware of who I am. I feel great and I feel like 30 is the ideal age [to start a family], because you're mature enough to know who you are and to have your boundaries and your standards, and not be afraid, too polite — but you're young enough to be a young woman," she explained. "I'm so looking forward to it."

The singer added, "I always said I'd have a baby at 30. But I also said I'm going to retire at 30 ... Only God knows." Regardless of when she and husband Jay-Z decide to start a family, they are each other's support system, and that love is evident in her music. "Jay and I have kind of made a decision that we want to be known for our music and not our relationships or scandals. But he is amazing," she said. "I definitely had a very natural friendship and connection with him. We've been together for a very long time and I'm very happy. Love is the foundation of everything, everything I do. My music is inspired by love — from my family, my husband, my sister."

Lady Gaga Unveils Panda Alter Ego On Japanese TV

'Gagapanda' jokes she's 'been eating a lot of bamboo this week' before revealing plans for 2012 tour, having babies and more.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga appears on the Japanese talk show "Sukkiri"
Photo: Sukkiri

Lady Gaga is currently in the planning stages for her next tour. After wrapping up her epic Monster Ball run earlier this year, Gaga teased her plans on a Japanese talk show on Tuesday (June 28).

"All over the world and I'm already planning," she said of the trek, which she expects to kick off at the top of 2012. "I'm so excited I can't even go to sleep at night."

Gaga appeared wearing a black-and-white dress, with her hair done up in two buns and her eye makeup painted in two panda-like circles. "I really like pandas," she told the hosts of her look, adding, "pandas have paws, and I always tell my fans to put their paws up. I've been eating a lot of bamboo this week," she joked. (Shortly after the appearance, the singer even began referring to herself as Gagapanda on Twitter.)

She then played a little game called "Yes or No," where she was asked questions about her popularity on Twitter, her love of cooking, her clothes and more. She later elaborated on some of the topics. "My dream is to continue to make music and tour and do as much as I can to give as much back to my fans," she said. "Personal dreams? I suppose one day I'll have panda babies."

Gaga owned up to having one major fear, however. "The only thing I really get scared of is missing out on moments with my family 'cause I travel so much, so I call my mom and dad every day," she said. Asked whether she was scared of ghosts, Gaga said, "No, we can be friends." She went on to add, "I love Japanese monster movies. I actually believe in ancestors. I have a lot of family in my past like my Aunt Joann and my grandfather that have passed on and I talk to them."

What do you think of Gaga's panda-inspired look? Tell us in the comments!

'Australian Idol' Judge Jay Dee Springbett Found Dead

Sony exec's cause of death has not yet been established.

"Australian Idol" judge Jay Dee Springbett was found dead at his home in Sydney on Thursday. He was 36.

He was discovered after friends called authorities when they couldn't contact the former "Idol" judge. He was already dead when authorities arrived at his Woolloomooloo apartment, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. As of press time, nothing else was known about the cause of death, although authorities believe nothing suspicious happened.

The U.K. native moved to Australia in 2004. He worked for Sony Music and joined "Idol" down under during the show's final season in 2009, replacing Kyle Sandilands. He was known as the show's resident "nice guy" judge. That year, Stan Walker was crowned the champ and later went on to become a successful artist in Australia and New Zealand.

The show aired on Network Ten in Australia, and a spokesperson for the network released this statement: "Our heartfelt condolences go out to Jay Dee's family at this very difficult time. Jay Dee was an asset to the final season of 'Australian Idol,' [and] we feel honored to have worked with him."

As a record executive, Springbett helped shape the careers of artists including Guy Sebastian, Human Nature, Rogue Traders and Natalie Bassingthwaighte. "Jay Dee was so very enthusiastic and passionate about his family, his music projects and his plans for the future," Sony Music Entertainment Australian and New Zealand CEO Denis Handlin said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "[He] was a great friend and larger-than-life charismatic character who will be missed enormously."

Fremantle, which produces the "Idol" shows, also expressed condolences in a statement. "The 'Australian Idol' family is deeply saddened by the passing of Jay Dee," the statement reads. "Our thoughts are with his family and all at Sony Music."

Justin Bieber Vintage Video: His First Meeting With Usher

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, 'Never Say Never' star said in 2009.

Ashton Kutcher & Village Voice: Twitter War Over Child Trafficking

Ashton Kutcher & Village Voice: Twitter War Over Child Trafficking

One thing everyone agrees on is that child prostitution is abhorrent. After that, though, opinions on the subject diverge.

Ashton Kutcher and The Village Voice newspaper are currently battling on Twitter over the legitimate number of child sex slaves, and the best way to help teens in trouble.

Kutcher and his wife Demi Moore are longtime advocates for sex trafficking awareness, and they run the DNA Foundation, whose mission is to eliminate child sex slavery and human trafficking. In an April 18 interview with Piers Morgan on CNN, Kutcher, 33, reiterated a University of Pennsylvania finding that there are "between 100,000 and 300,000 child sex slaves in the United States today" -- a figure also used by the New York Times, USA Today, the U.N., C-Span, the Orphan Justice Center and others.

Two months later, The Village Voice came out with a story saying that the paper had researched the issue and found that the figures were way too high. "There are not 100,000 to 300,000 children in America turning to prostitution every year. The statistic was hatched without regard to science. It is a bogeyman," the paper says, adding that police make only about 800 child prostitution arrests a year.

The piece sparked an all-out Twitter war between Kutcher and The Village Voice. Among the actor's tweets were: "Hey @villagevoice if you ever want 2 have a productive conversation about how 2 end human trafficking as oppose to belittling my efforts {let me know}," and "Hey @villagevoice speaking of data, maybe you can help me... How much $ did your 'escorts' in you classifieds on backpage make last year?"

The last tweet was a reference to the fact that Village Voice Media, which owns Backpage.com, an online classifieds site, runs ads for escorts.

The Village Voice hit back about Kutcher's "Twitter tirade," with such comments as "@aplusk We debunked your numbers, and showed that real problem is teen homelessness and drug use," and "Any underage prostitution is repugnant, so @aplusk, how about treating real underlying teen problems, not pushing imaginary sex slave myths?"

As Kutcher and the paper continue to snipe at each other on Twitter, both sides may have inadvertently done a good thing by bringing way more attention to the issue than it might otherwise have garnered.

Ultimately, both sides are fighting the good fight to bring an end to child suffering. But we'd love to see them put an end to their feud, team up and use their considerable resources to find solutions to a harrowing problem.

Beyonce Talks Career, Motherhood With Piers Morgan

'I always said I'd have a baby at 30,' singer says in new interview.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber's Grammy Performance Will Be 'A Crossover,' Usher Says

The 'O.M.G.' singer looks forward to sharing the stage with his protégé on Sunday night.
By James Montgomery

HOLLYWOOD — At Sunday's 53rd Grammy Awards, Usher will be pulling double duty as both a nominee and a performer. Of course, given the massive year he just completed — with the success of his smash single "O.M.G." and as a mentor to rising phenom Justin Bieber — Ush's Grammy plans seem rather fitting.

Especially since he'll be performing with Bieber (and Bieber's pal Jaden Smith), a move that's just as much about celebrating Usher's successes as it is the successes of his young protégé.

"Having been through [the Grammys] so many times, you couldn't want for anything more than for your young protégé to have the opportunity to have one, so, in support of him having his moment, I wanted to be here," Usher told MTV News on Thursday, hours before his performance at the (Belvedere) RED launch party in Hollywood. "And also to be there to perform, to kind of tell the story of how we came together. This music business has definitely been good to both of us, and this year we have a lot to be happy for."

And just how will the dynamic duo tell that story? Well, Usher wasn't about to reveal all the details, but he did say that he's hoping their performance will show another side of Bieber ... a side most tend to overlook.

"The performance will be fun," Usher explained. "We want to get up there and just do what we do. Be comfortable, and have a great time. ... This is kind of a crossover for Justin. Having performed on so many different stages, this is the way that I wanted him to be seen and an opportunity to show the industry — a lot of the industry, that didn't believe [in him] — some of his other talents. He's going to play acoustically, and also, we'll get down a little bit."

And though Ush is up for a pair of Grammy awards on Sunday — Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Contemporary R&B Album for Raymond v. Raymond — he's most looking forward to sharing the stage with Bieber and giving fans a look at where the young artist will be heading next.

"I'm very proud, man. I definitely saw it from the beginning, but thanks to the team that we have around us, it was made to happen. And that story has only just begun," Usher said. "The story of Justin Bieber doesn't stop with screaming girls; we need screaming fans all around the world ... a cultural experience that's much more than just fanfare. And that's what this is. That's what the Grammys will be; that's what my next phase for Justin is. This is the way I found him: I found him with a guitar in his hand, so I want him to be seen that way."

Don't miss "Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys," a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And stick with us all Grammy night for coverage of the red carpet, the show, the afterparties and beyond!

'Transformers: Dark of the Moon,' 'Larry Crowne' & 'Monte Carlo' Hit Theaters

'Transformers: Dark of the Moon,' 'Larry Crowne' & 'Monte Carlo' Hit Theaters

Which movies are fun for the whole family and which ones are treats just for you? Find out!

In theaters now:

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Short Story:
Shia LeBeouf reprises his role as Sam Witwicky in the third installment in the Transformers franchise -- and, this time around, he's got a new girlfriend (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) whose job is to look perpetually hot as Autobots and evil Decepticons duke it out over the fate of mankind. The plot -- the Decepticons want to use a new robot technology to bring their home world of Cybertron to Earth -- takes a back seat to giant robots slicing each other to pieces, cars blowing up, and Chicago being reduced to a pile of smoking rubble. But, hey, that's the point of these movies!

What They're Saying:
"Watching Transformers: Dark of the Moon makes you die a little inside. Is this the future of movies? God help us! Michael Bay, you've done it again." -- Rolling Stone

"If you're going to make a movie in which some of your stars are animated toys and much of downtown Chicago is reduced to rubble, this is the way to do it: shamelessly, with no expense spared and no cliche avoided." -- Chicago Reader

Good for the Kids?
Rated PG-13, this movie is perfect for teens and adults, especially those who grew up with the Transformers franchise. Though the amazing action sequences are mostly blood-free, plenty of humans get "vaporized," so it's probably best to leave the little ones at home with a babysitter and some Transformers toys.

Monte Carlo
Short Story:
When friends Grace (Selena Gomez), Meg (Leighton Meester) and Emma (Katie Cassidy) venture to Paris for their dream vacation, they are dissapointed when things don't at first go as planned. But things take a turn for the awesome when Grace is mistakken for an English heiress, and their bland trip soon turns in to an unforgettable vacation filled with love, adventure and even paparazzi!

What They're Saying:
"Meester and Cassidy provide solid sidekicks, though that perhaps sells them short: They ultimately carry the movie. All of their storylines lead to self-discovery and sappiness." -- Associated Press

"Were I a certain 12-year-old girl, Monte Carlo would be a giant frosted pastry, even if that pastry tastes suspiciously like Gomez's 2009 Disney Channel original movie, Princess Protection Program." -- Boston Globe

Good for the Kids?
Rated PG, this flick is perfect for young girls -- especially Selena Gomez fans! With Glee's Cory Monteith playing a love interest, this fun, romantic comedy really has something for girls of any age!

Larry Crowne
Short Story:
When Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) suddently loses his job, he decides to start over and head back college... community college, that is. In a class of outcasts, Larry expectedly makes friends with some of his fellow classmates and even strikes up a romance with his jaded -- but beautiful -- professor (Julia Roberts).

What They're Saying:
"At this point in their careers, Hanks and Roberts know a lot about how to make movies and how to reach audiences; these are relaxed and professional star performances, long on charm and short on theatrics." -- Salon.com

"Larry Crowne has Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and a good premise and a colorful supporting cast, but what it doesn't have is a reason for existing." -- Chicago Sun-Times

Good for the Kids?
Who can resist Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts reuniting on screen? Not adults. But with a PG-13 rating and a decidely mature plot, this may not be a good fit for young kids... so hire a babysitter! Even though the film has recieved mixed reviews, Hanks and Roberts are a match made in Hollywood heaven.

In Case You Missed:

Cars 2
Short Story:
Get ready to put the pedal to the metal! Pixar is back with Cars 2, a sequel to the 2006 animated hit. This time around, champion racecar Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and redneck tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) venture overseas for the first World Grand Prix. But things take a wrong -- and funny -- turn when clueless Mater accidentally gets tangled in a dangerous web of international espionage.

What They're Saying:
"This is Mater's movie. It's a Materthon. I would call it Materific if he didn't leave me longing for WALLE's robot to crush him into a silent cube." -- TIME Magazine

"The Cars characters will never be in danger of melting my heart, but the spy antics in this film are enough of a rip-roaring distraction to carry me through the almost two-hour running time." -- IGN Movies

Good for the Kids?
This may be the first Pixar film to recieve not-so-steller reviews, but you'll probably still want to race over to your nearest theater! With familiar characters and amazing animation, young kids will love the action and adventure.

Bad Teacher
Short Story:
Don't expect to get an education from Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz), a wildly inappropriate, foul-mouthed, gold-digging middle school teacher. When she unexpectedly gets dumped by her fiancé, she sets her sights on a rich substitute teacher (Justin Timberlake), while fighting off the affections of a sarcastic gym teacher (Jason Segel).

What They're Saying:
"Bad Teacher is a pulled punch, a pot-smoking/kid cussing/teacher copulating farce that is less than the sum of its parts." -- Orlando Sentinel

"A refreshingly raucous comedy that comes surprisingly close to completely living up to its lack of conviction..." -- MSN Movies

Good for the Kids?
It's probably better to leave the kids at home for this raunchy comedy. Rated R for drug use, nudity and language, this flick is good for adults needing a few laughs!

Conan O'Brien Can't Stop
Short Story:
After being very publicly ousted from NBC's Tonight Show, Conan O'Brien hits the road for a 32-city music and comedy tour. Appropriately titled the Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour, this documentary follows Conan's journey when he is contractually banned from appearing on television, radio and the Internet for six months after his last show.

What They're Saying:
"It's an equally insightful and excruciating journey, with our quip-ready protagonist perpetually caught between two modes: eager-to-please caffeinated and near-breakdown frustrated." -- Time Out New York

"The biggest laughs and most intriguing revelations are provided offstage in this slickly produced documentary." -- Variety

Good For the Kids?
Rated R for language, this documentary is perfect for both adults and fans of Conan, but probably not kids. The movie gives a revealing backstage look at Conan's vulnerabilities and frustration after he's forced to leave the Tonight Show. Don't fear, the comedian's humor shines though as he demonstrates his mastery in the art of improvisation.
